Pie and Mash – Proper Grub for the Earl ?
As many of you may remember Danny Dyer filmed part of an episode of the sensational YouTube series ‘Power to the People‘ in our pie and mash shop, shortly before securing the role of Mick Carter in EastEnders.
Pie and mash of course, was a staple diet of the East End and has been for over 100 years. Danny commented in our Visitors Book ‘What a Gaff, love the old School feel. It’s a dying breed, proper people, proper grub. Honour to be here!’
Danny has recently suggested, as reported by OK Magazine, that Hugh Bonneville of Downtown Abbey fame, should join him on the set of EastEnders. Our staff were chatting in the kitchen recently and it was wondered if Hugh Bonneville’s character, The Earl of Grantham, on his numerous trips to the Capital, ever feasted on the London flavour of the time – good old traditional pie and mash! Interesting thought that the Earl of Grantham probably visited London at the time Arments were just making their first tray of pies! Hugh Bonneville, however, is a London lad, being born in Blackheath, just 6 miles away from our shop, so perhaps not such as stranger to the pie and mash world!
