Celebrating our 104th Birthday this week

Arments Pie & Mash London - It's Our 104th Birthday!

Posted on April 13th, 2018

This weekend Arment’s are celebrating 104 years of delicious pie and mash!

Incredibly, its 104 years since the first Arment’s Eel and Pie shop opened on Walworth Road. To put it into perspective that’s the year…

  • The Great War started
  • The first colour film was shown in London
  • The Panama Canal opened
  • And – the first air flight out of sight of land took place (Scotland to Norway)

Arment’s has been open for business ever since, managing to stay open throughout both World Wars. During the Second World War the shop sold soup as well as liquor, pie and mash to hungry, rationed Londoners.

Arment’s – a family-run business

The Arment’s business has been passed down from generation to generation, finally moving to our existing, bigger premises on Westmoreland Road. Today, Roy and Cheryl continue to run the business to the same high standards with pies that are lovingly made to the same delicious recipe. That’s why Arment’s remains one of the best Pie and Mash restaurants in London to this day.

Many landmark years to look back on

Over recent years we’ve received some much-appreciated awards. We’ve long been recognized for our services to the local community – and we were especially proud when supporters voted to have a building named after us – Arments Court in Walworth. We also received a prestigious Blue Plaque in 2013 – and celebrated our centenary in style on April 14th, 2014.

Arment’s have also been recent runners up – and winners – of the coveted Time Out Love London awards –where Londoners across the capital voted for what’s great about their neighbourhood.

A healthier ‘take’ on a takeaway

Our artisan meat pies are made with 100% beef stead from Scotland and Ireland – and we don’t use fillers or preservatives. Our fluffy mash is made with just potatoes and salt, and all our food is fully traceable. And not only are meals naturally delicious – they’re nutritious too.

Last year our pies, mash and liquor underwent expert nutritional analysis. We were delighted to discover that Arment’s meals contain fewer calories and less fat and sugar than many other takeaways. A standard meal of pie, mash and liquor contains just 581* calories – that’s just a quarter of your daily intake.

And you needn’t worry you’re eating hidden sugar.  Our standard pie and mash meals contain just 1.7 g* of sugar.  This is unlike the sugar content in many other takeaway foods – for example many burger meals and Chinese and Indian takeaways.

A big thank you to our customers for your support over the years!
