At Arment’s we love a good party – it gives us an excuse to break out the bubbly – naturally accompanied by some delicious pie and mash! This 2019 there are a host of special anniversaries well worth celebrating. Here are a few events you may well remember.
30 years since the collapse of the Berlin Wall
The famously fortified Cold War wall kept East and West Berliners apart from the 1960s to 1989 as people on either side began the symbolic act of breaking it up. Millions of people around the world rejoiced as the reunification took place. Nowadays infamous border control point ‘Checkpoint Charlie’ is a major Berlin tourist attraction.
30 years since “When Harry met Sally” hit the big screen
Many of us will remember this iconic movie that explored whether men and women can be friends – and that famous scene in the café where the director’s mum uttered “I’ll have what she’s having”.
40 years since the introduction of the Sony Walkman
Legend has it that the company’s president was so fed up hauling his large stereo tape recorder around with him on flights that he requested that his engineers make him a smaller version.
40 years since the first female PM took office
It’s been 40 years since the first female Prime Minister was elected. Margaret Thatcher or “The Iron Lady served three consecutive terms.
50 years since Sesame Street burst onto our screens
Who can forget Big Bird or the Cookie Monster?
50 years since the Summer of Love
It’s been an incredible 50 years since the iconic three-day Woodstock festival took place on a dairy farm near New York. As tickets sold out promoters decided to open up the concert as free to everyone. An estimated half a million people turned up to see acts like Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Credence Clearwater Revival and Jefferson Airplane.
One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind
Last but far from least it’s been 50 years since the first moon landing. In what now looks like a big tin can – Apollo 11 – the crew consisting of Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins flew to the moon. Neil Armstrong was the first man to set foot on there on July 20th, 1969. The astronauts placed a US flag and plaque on the moon that reads “Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon. July 1969 AD. We came in peace for all mankind.”
From the Summer of Love to the first moon-landing there are plenty of reasons to get together and celebrate this year. From weddings and birthday parties to corporate events, we can provide you with the ideal party menu, the real flavour of London, still handmade on our premises in Walworth to our original family recipe.
